The Holden Torana has a wonderful race heritage that really beginning in 1970 with the introduction of the six cylinder LC Torana GTR XU-1. The Torana was developed to combat growing public concern with big V8 muscle cars and the connection with growing road statistics, rising insurance premiums and a looming global oil crisis.
By 1976 V8 were again socially acceptable and Holden had developed the sporty LX SS Hatch. In 1977 they introduced the A9X option to the SS. This included a stronger diff, rear disc brakes, bonnet scoop and larger radiator and electric fans. By 1978 the SS A9X was dominating the Australian Touring Car Championship. In 1979 Peter Brock won Bathurst in an SS A9X by a record six laps.
